Celebrating 6 Years of Miss Dimplez.com

06.19.2014

Six years to this day I started Miss Dimplez.com, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that it would become something this big. Never did I imagine that I would be able to afford living on my own terms, in the city of my dreams, off of something I made in my freshman year college apartment.

This is all such a blessing.

And between you and I, when I first started I had no idea what I was doing. Seriously.

As a matter of fact, when I first started I remember reaching out to my director inspiration, TAJ. I asked him for whatever advice he could give me. I wanted to be the next Necole Bitchie, and ’til this day I remember him asking me, “what makes you special?”

When TAJ asked me that question I remember trying to defend myself. I quickly retorted, “I’m giving my brutal honest opinion. People WILL listen to me.” He laughed. He even went on to tell me how he could start a blog the following day with his own opinion and that people would be more likely to listen to him, than me. He was right.

Then he asked, “Why should anyone listen to you? Or read your blog for your opinion? What makes you special?”

I didn’t know what to say. TAJ began to tell me a story about when he was learning about photography and in becoming a director, he took the time to learn everything that there was to know about being just that. From taking a still, to editing, to learning the different methods of contrasting; he full immersed himself in every piece of knowledge attributable to owning a camera.

So then he asked, “Do you know everything that there is to know about blogging?”

I didn’t.

“Do you know how to create and build a site?”

At the time? No.

“Do you know how to market your blog? Do you know how to get it on google? Do you know to get how it more visible? Or how to create a logo or edit a graphic to accompany your editorials?”

I didn’t.

“Do you know everything that there is to know about the internet?”

Not even close. I knew nothing but how to work the template-based Blogspot I was operating at the time. And in my silence I realized that TAJ was right. If I had any intention of being successful as a blogger on the internet, I had to know everything that there was to know about it; from making a website to making mine amazing.

It was then and there I took it upon myself to learn everything. Literally. From web and graphic design to digital marketing and publicity, I have learned it all. With those skills and Miss Dimplez.com, I have been afforded opportunities far beyond my wildest dreams.  For everything I am grateful. I have been so blessed to work and partner with amazing brands, artists, and sheer awesome people. The love of my readership, my family, and friends has only made the journey thus far that much sweeter. And it only gets better from here.

Here’s to many more years of dream living and sweetness. Thank you all for your support along the way.
