The internet is on strike today. There are currently two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House. I have been following these bills since they were first introduced over the summer. To sum things up, both bills would censor the internet and detrimentally affect the way a lot of online businesses, blogs, artists, and forums do work.
Why didn’t I black my site out? The web blackouts are all about raising awareness, kind of like this post… And to be frank, the initial threat is over. On Friday the White House made a huge statement that sort of put the legislation at bay, but just like every other piece of legislation that circumvents privacy, it’ll be back, most likely under a different name. So be aware and stay aware.
